When Tennis Became a Statement
Since opening in 1910, Grand Hotel Tremezzo has embodied the elegance of Lake Como's belle époque era. Conceived as a retreat for Europe's aristocracy and high society, the hotel combined lakeside grandeur with modern leisure pursuits, including one of the region's earliest private clay tennis courts.
During the 1920s and 1930s, tennis at Tremezzo became more than a pastime. Mariuccia Gandola, daughter of the hotel's founding family, was an enthusiastic player who wrote in her diaries about the confidence and sense of freedom the sport brought her. At a time when women's independence was still far from the norm, her hours on the court reflected a broader shift towards personal and social emancipation.
